Atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) is the most efficient method for the production of ceramic coatings.
An electric arc is ignited in the plasma torch between an anode and a cathode with which the process gas is ionised and heat to as much as 20,000 Kelvin.
The powdery coating material is melted by the hot gas stream and propelled onto the workpiece surface.
Typical coating thicknesses are within the range of 0.1 and 2 millimetres.
In addition to ceramics, metals and carbides can also be used as coating materials.
